"My name is Sinan Erkurt. I founded the Peer Project in the summer of 2023. Over the summer I done a lot of part-time work as a tutor. I believed I could contribute to younger students's education meaningfully especially in the subject areas that related to my A-levels in Further Maths and Physics where I considered myself sufficiently knowledgeable. Most of the students I worked with were initially children's of family friends, in preparation for exams such as the 11+ entrance exams. However, noticing many of my friends do similar tutoring work during their free-time gave me the idea of combining our networks allowing us to reach out to more potential students who need help. This led to the creation of the Peer Project, we are a collective of student tutors who aim to provide a targetted and personalised tutoring experience to younger years at considerably affordable prices."

The Inspiration

The Inspiration

While helping my brother's preparation for the 11+exams and the ISEB test I realised using my own not too distant experience of going through the same processes enabled me to give effective and personal advice.

After months of hard work together my brother achieved great results and acceptances into top secondary schools. Having a notable impact on his process felt rewarding.

Tutoring Further

That initial sense of rewards led me to pursue tutoring further. It started out as an hour or two on the weekend, mostly helping a couple of children of family friend's with the daunting process of scholarship and common entrance tests.

Being payed was also an added bonus but the primary motivator was being able to help younger students get into their dream schools in the process.

Building a Team

Soon enough some of my friends learnt about my part-time work as a tutor, making money on the side. They asked me If I could connect them with anyone they could help tutor. This led to a network of tutors and tutees in our local friend community. Slowly we grew in numbers, to a group of 7 friends that had a shared interest in tutoring during their spare time.

So I decided to found the led PeerProject initiative, a coalition of like minded, ambitious and driven peers that want to make an impact by offering assistance to younger years.

The Journey Forward

We eventually had to grow out of our family-based networks, so the Peer Project website and service was brought forth. We had the opportunity to reach out to many of our primary school and spread the initiative in those networks, from our story beginning 2 year ago, the Peer Project has helped guide over 30 students in their journey to amazing new schools.

Testimonials

  • Jacob helped my daughter prepare for 11+ entrance exams in schools such as St Paul's Girls and Latymer's, I was impressed by his professionalism about the whole process and his approachable and impactful teaching style. His 2 months of work with Laura helped her gain an offer from Latymer, we would highly recommend Jacob and the peer project to anyone!

    Parent of a Tutee

  • I worked with Felicia on Fridays after school, she came to my house to help me with my French. We have worked on my speaking and writing, learning a lot of vocabulary and grammar content in a short period of time. She is really great and I would recommend her as a tutor to anyone!

    Year 8 Student

  • My son worked with Sinan in preparation for his 11+ examinations. Sinan focused on his weaknesses in maths and helped him become more comfortable with exam questions. My son achieved places in top schools such as Eton and St Paul's, I would highly recommend the Peer Project to anyone!
